FR : La sculpture s’appelle “Le tireur d’épine“, en italien “Lo Spinario“. Chef d’œuvre de l’art romain de l’époque hellénistique, elle a été exécutée au 1er siècle avant J-C. Ma mère, dont la famille était d’origine anglaise, était enthousiaste à l’idée que je devienne un artiste. Mon père… pas du tout. Mes parents se séparent au moment où je débute mes études universitaires en arts visuels. J’ai terminé ensuite mes études post-universitaires à Londres au grand bonheur de ma mère qui a profité de l’occasion pour venir me visiter. Bien des années plus tard, mon père, réalisant son erreur… m’a offert cette reproduction au retour d’un court séjour à Rome. La symbolique de ce cadeau est plutôt touchante: mon père qui, au départ ne voulait pas que je devienne un artiste, par ce cadeau… s’est enlevé une épine du pied.
EN : The sculpture title is “Boy with Thorn“, “Lo Spinario” in italian. It was executed during the first Century A.D. A masterpiece of Roman art from the Hellenistic period. My mother, whose family came originally from England, was enthusiastic at the idea that I would become an artist. My father… not at all. They separated when I started my BFA in Visual Arts. Then I completed my post-graduate studies in London, to my mother’s immense satisfaction. She couldn’t miss the opportunity to come visit me. Many years later, my father realized his mistake… During a short stay in Rome, he came back with a reproduction of this sculpture which he offered to me. The symbolic of the gesture struck me. Through this gift, he seemed to have withdrawn a thorn from the sole of his foot.
